Introduction:

Welcome to the video tutorial for Faronics WINSelect.

Faronics WINSelect is a powerful Windows utility that provides full control over a computers system settings. It can easily transform the computer into a Kiosk style workstation by locking down browser functionality. Administrators can also control third party programs and operating system features.

For the purposes of this tutorial WINSelect has already been installed on the workstation but not run for the first time.

After installation, a reboot is necessary and the WINSelect password entry dialog will automatically appear. Enter a new password, confirm it, then select ‘set’.

Now you must launch the Administrative console.

You can do this by either double-clicking on the WINSelect icon located in the system tray or using the CTRL+ALT+Shift+F8 key combination.

Enter the password that you just created and click ok.

This will launch the administrator in to the Wizard mode.

The first screen to appear provides WINSelect installation details.

Click Next and the Kiosk Mode dialog screen will appear. This is where a Kiosk-style workstation is configured.

To enable this option click the Enable checkbox then click the Add button and select any applications that you would like to launch for your Kiosk, such as Internet Explorer.

If you would like the application to launch automatically when the workstation is turned on, check the box beside the application path and name.

The ‘Maintain current size and position for application windows’ checkbox is available if you would like to size the application yourself and freeze it in position on the desktop.

Once you have finished making your desired adjustments, click Next and the Start Button options screen will appear.

Since we enabled the Kiosk mode in the previous screen the Start Button has been completely disabled. If the Kiosk mode was not enabled we would have control over specific Start button menu items.

Finally you can also enable the Start Menu into its classic style to further customize it if the Kiosk mode is not enabled.

Click Next.

The Task Manager and Windows Explorer options screen now appears. The Task Manager has been automatically disabled due to the Kiosk Mode being enabled.

Below this are Windows Explorer options. You will notice that ‘Disable UNC paths’ has been disabled to prevent network shares from being accessed within the Internet Browser and Windows Explorer.

It is also possible to Disable the Right-click feature, Disable folder manipulation and to Disable Drag and Drop features within the Windows Explorer.

Click Next and the Control Panel options screen will appear.

This option allows you to hide all Control Panel Applets, hide only selected applets, and include applet names that are not already included in the list.

When you’ve selected the options that are right for you, click Finish.

This will bring you to a message letting you know that there are more options within the Administrative console. Answer yes and from the Administrative Console you can navigate to each option from the tree structure on the left.

You can do things like configure options to disable drives and file extensions.

Set application restrictions including with specific restrictions for MS Office 2003.

You can specify Internet Browser restrictions, as well as Printer restrictions with the ability to adjust the # of pages a user may print.

Add customized Acceptable Use Policy messages, and finally Set up User Session options plus there are many other indepth options that were not featured in this tutorial.

Conclusion:

After WINSelect has been installed and configured, your PC will prompt you to log-off then back on so that all changes will become active.

Once you have logged back in your PC will be running under the customized options that you have selected!

Here we see an example of an Acceptable Use Policy Message that each user must accept before going on to use the workstation.

Here we see our PC booting up in the Kiosk Mode under the Administrators selected options.
